Poker Etiquette
As with all sports there are various rules that govern a player’s behavior as well as unspoken rules that show good sportsmanship. The following guidelines should ensure that all players enjoy a fair game. At the Table Firstly, follow the everyday rule of thumb in regards to using foul language or tobacco products. Be considerate of other players and their requests. Avoid slow play. Some players feel that by playing slow they can intimidate other players or gain an advantage, but as a general rule it is good to make decision in a reasonable amount of time. Do not splash the pot. Splashing the pot is when a player throws in chips and does not stack their bet in a neat fashion. Splashing the pot makes it hard for other players to determine the exact amount bet and slows down the pace of play. Always remember to act in turn. This means that you should not bet or fold until it is your turn because the action that you take could effect the action that takes place afterward. Never grab a large pile of chips and fake other players into thinking you are going to make a large bet and then grab a very small portion of chips and actually wager. When you do grab an amount of chips, place them into the pot at one time. Comments about possible hands should not be made. This is because the unwelcome advice could tip off less seasoned players to a piece of strategy that was previously unseen. While it is not frowned upon to help less experienced players learn the game, it should be done at the right time and in the right setting. Any game in which money is involved is neither the proper setting nor the proper time. In games where blinds are used, it is inappropriate for players to leave the table in order to escape their turn of posting blinds. Some players use this tactic to improve their betting position and it is very much frowned upon. First and foremost act like a lady or gentleman and never touch another person or their cards. Never be rude to other players and never cheat or collaborate with another player in any cheating scheme. If these rules are followed, the game of poker can be enjoyed by all. |
