Texas Hold’em Poker Tips Emotions The game of poker can be very emotional. Players who ride emotional highs or lows are said to be on tilt. Being on tilt generally affects players in a negative manner due to the mathematical nature of poker. Experts advise to be patient when luck seems to not be at your side and to remain calm if you incur a bad beat. Many strategy books and experts advise that poker players who can let their emotions play as small a role as possible are far better than the player who lets emotions dominate. Bluffs and Slowplaying Bluffs are used to keep opponents guessing. However, they should be used sparingly. Bluffs are not as effective in games in which the stakes are low. This is because most players are willing to risk a little amount of money. The bluff becomes more effective as the stakes become higher because the average person does not want to risk losing large sum of money. Thus, it is advised by many poker strategy guides to use the bluff very sparingly in low stakes games while taking advantage of its effectiveness during high stakes ventures. Another technique used by expert players is slowplaying. Slowplaying is usually done by a player who has made an exceptionally strong hand after the flop. By acting as though they have a weak hand, players can string along an opponent in an attempt to induce the opposing players into making a large bluff. Once the opposing player makes bluffs in an attempt to steal the pot from an apparently weak opponent, the player who has been slowplaying jumps at the opportunity to win big and calls the bluff. This is a standard strategy employed when a big hand is made early in the game. Common Mistakes Experts agree that most novice players simply play too many hands. If the two hole cards possessed by a player are not good, the player should fold his hand before needlessly throwing away any more money into the pot. Novice players also overvalue suited hole cards. The rank of the card should be looked at first and then the suit. While having suited cards is a plus and leaves a player with more options, it plays second fiddle to the importance that should be placed on the rank of the hole cards. |
