Other Types of Poker

Omaha

While Texas Hold’em has gained the most notoriety of late, Omaha has long been a favorite among poker players. In an Omaha game, players are dealt four cards face down. These four cards are called hole cards. Three cards are then turned face up by the dealer after a round of betting. These three cards are called the flop. Another round of betting occurs and the dealer then turns another community card face up. Another round of betting takes place and then the deal turns over a fifth and final community card. A final round of betting occurs and players that remain in the hand show their cards. Players must play two cards from the four hole cards that they possess and play three cards from the five community cards that are face up on the table. This is how a five card hand is made in a game of Omaha poker and how the high stakes winners are determined from the losers.

Seven Card Stud

Seven Card Stud is another game similar to Texas Hold’em and Omaha that is well liked by many poker players. In a game of Seven Card Stud players are dealt all the cards that they can use to make a hand individually. Thus, there are no community or board cards as they are sometimes called. Players post their blinds or antes and the dealer then begins the game. Before any betting occurs, players are dealt three cards. Two of these cards are dealt face down while the third is turned face up. As in Omaha, the cards that are turned face down are called hole cards. After a round of betting, a fourth card is dealt face up to each player. Another round of batting happens and then a fifth card is dealt face up to each player. Once again, betting takes place and a sixth card is dealt face up to each player. After another round of betting a seventh and final card is dealt face down to each player. A final round of betting takes place and players that remain in the game show their cards. The best five cards from the seven that each player possesses is used to make the poker hand. The best five-card hand takes the pot.
